When Teeth Require Extraction

Because the preservation of your natural teeth is always a priority for us, we will only perform oral surgery if the tooth is severely decayed, damaged, or otherwise compromising your oral health. Don’t worry, our dentists will not remove any teeth unless it becomes absolutely necessary. Typically, we can save a tooth with other restorative methods like dental fillings, root canal therapy, or same-day dental crowns. It is only when those other options have been exhausted that tooth extraction and minor oral surgery turns into a viable solution. We will never keep you in the dark with regards to your oral health. If our dentists need to extract one or more of your teeth, we will brief you on the situation prior to moving forward.

You may need to have a tooth taken out if you have:

  • Advanced gum disease
  • Deep cavities
  • An infection
  • A tooth injury or trauma

How the Procedure Will Go

Fortunately, the tooth extraction procedure is simple and very straightforward. You shouldn’t feel any discomfort thanks to the application of local anesthetic and if desired, additional dental sedation. We’ll start by taking an X-ray of the tooth in question. This will show our dentists how deep the problem goes as well as the positioning of the tooth’s root. Afterwards, we’ll numb the area with a local anesthetic and begin once that’s taken effect.A dental tool known as an “elevator” is used to loosen the tooth before it is removed with dental forceps. You may feel pressure as this is happening but don’t hesitate to let us know if you feel pain. We can always apply more numbing anesthetic if needed.
