Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Near MeAbove all else, we want our patients to feel calm and relaxed in the dental chair. If you suffer from dental anxiety or simply have trouble sitting still for longer periods of time, our Jackson dentists can administer oral-conscious pill sedation.

This involves the prescription of anti-anxiety medication prior to a procedure to allow for an optimal experience once you arrive at our office.

Who Is Dental Sedation For?

Patients of all ages can benefit from sedation dentistry and everything that it has to offer. Some individuals prefer to undergo sedation during routine teeth cleanings while others may want to use the medication for a more in-depth procedure like root canal therapy or a tooth extraction.

Aside from dental anxiety, sedation may be suitable for patients with:

  • A sensitive gag reflex
  • A fear of needles
  • Claustrophobia (while in the dental chair)
  • An inability to control movements
  • Physical, cognitive, or behavioral special needs
  • Intense teeth sensitivity

How Pill Sedation Works

For the medication to take effect in time, our dentists will ask that you use what is given to you about an hour before your procedure begins. This way, you won’t still feel nervous or unsure once you sit down in the dental chair.

Similar to how laughing gas operates, pill sedation will allow you to remain in communication with our dentists. For example, if you’re asked to tilt your head one way or open your mouth a little wider, you should be able to answer the command. However, taking the medication will make you feel groggy and could cause you to fall asleep.

For safety reasons, we urge you to arrange for someone to pick you up once your procedure is over. This is due to the fact that oral sedation temporarily affects your memory and motor skills.
